Blog #9: Diffusion

Remember when TikTok was called something else? Something different entirely? Before August 2018, the widely popular app known as TikTok used to be called Musical.ly. A simple phone app that allowed its users to create and post short videos of themselves dancing and lip-syncing to songs of their choice. Musical.ly was extremely popular, admittingly, when it was first released and featured. Now well-known creators like Lisa and Lena, Loren Gray, Baby Ariel, and many more were quick to follow and set every trend and dance.      Today, Musical.ly is no longer a brand name and instead has turned into the worldwide popular app called TikTok. TikTok is owned and run by an international company in China called ByteDance. The social media platform hasn't changed the initial reason for video creation. But it's changed all in the same. The short clips of Musical.ly now have a duration of 15 seconds up to a full minute with a wide variety of video genres from the origin

Blog Post #11: EOTO #2

For my EOTO project term and concept, I chose to research and present on Citizen Journalism. Citizen Journalism is basically recording and writing about news stories and events but done by untrained reporters, meaning everyday people hence the "citizen" in Citizen Journalism. The journalists don't work or get paid by large journalism or publishing companies like the New York Times or CBS. The overall idea of Citizen Journalism is to give every citizen a voice in the media and them a chance to participate in journalism, even without a college degree. It was deemed necessary because the mainstream media's credibility has become questionable at best in recent years.      Some of the positives to Citizen Journalism are that it presents the opportunity to cover all sides of the story, not just the bias side or one side of the story, and gives ordinary people a voice in the media. The events being reported on typically revolve around smaller but real challenges, such as

Final Blog

Throughout my years with technology, social media has played somewhat of a big role in my life. When I was younger, I was the only person without a phone, or social media and resorted to using the landline at home to talk to people. As much as I hate admitting it, during that time in my life, as envious as I was of others owning a phone, looking back now, it was almost a relief not to wonder if I should post photos from an event or what people would think or even say. I do, however, see the positive aspects of media and all it can do for us. Such as a rather recent event which occurred last week when a student from my high school and in my graduating class tragically passed away. Had it not been for my presence on social media, I wouldn't have known for days, weeks, or even months of his passing. But media also has a dark role to play in life.       Over time, I have had to learn to think through what I'm saying or posting on social media. Although some social media platf

Blog Post #6: EOTO Project

EOTO Project Blog Post By Zea Hirshberg     For my EOTO project portion, I decided to research the background history of Netflix and its positive and negative effects. Netflix was founded all the way back in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph who also happens to be High Point University's current Entrepreneur in Residence. When the company was first starting out, it began as a DVD-by-mail subscription. It was one of a kind back in the day as it was the only DVD rental store that mailed its customers the DVD. This was ultimately became known as the "Netflix Rental" period and laid down the foundation for what the company became in later years. The rental period lasted from when the company was founded until sometime in early 2007 and was considered to be "phase one" of the company's growth. In late 2007, it evolved into phase two and turned into an online distribution which means instead of having the physical hard copies of movies and TV shows, they wer

Blog Post #3: Six Clauses/Freedoms of the First Amendment in the Black Lives Matter Protest

The Six Clauses/Freedoms of the First Amendment in the Black Lives Matter Protest By Zea Hirshberg     It's no surprise the Black Lives Matter movement had such an incredible turnout. In fact, it was recorded that in a total of 550 places across the United States of America, half a million people showed up to the protest. The BLM protest began when a 46-year old black man by the name of George Floyd was unjustly killed, and many say murdered, by white police officers. And why? Many suggest the reason for the four police officers' brutal ways was because Floyd was a black male. It's for these two exact purposes, the Minneapolis Police Department fired all four, and one man, in particular, was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Derek Chauvin was clearly identified in witness videos when he pinned Floyd to the ground before putting his knee on his neck and keeping it there for a fatal amount of time even after Floyd lost all consciousness. The rem

Blog Post #5: Eight Expressions Value

Eight Expressions Value Blog Post By Zea Hirshberg       Out of the Eight Values of Free Expression, I believe there cannot be just one value that can be deemed the "most important" out of them all. The top three values I have chosen to discuss in this blog today are number four (Individual Self-Fulfillment), number five (Check on Governmental Power), and lastly, number eight (Protect Dissent).      Starting off with value number four, also known as Individual Self-Fulfillment or Self-Actualization. The description of this particular value of free expression allows individuals to express who they are in order to create their own identity. For example, getting a tattoo or dying your hair, to use the example from class. Both of these acts other people may not necessarily like or feel is a way of self-expression but to the individual, it's a way of presenting themself to society. To show who they are. Where others see a tattoo as a stupid mistake of ink being injected into y

Blog Post #1: Five Sources

Five Sources Blog Post By Zea Hirshberg Today, I will be discussing in this blog post about my personal top five news and media outlets starting down at the bottom of the list and going all the way up to number one. The first website I like to use is a platform called the Daily News. While this particular website isn't the always the first to stay up to date on up to the minute news, I can always find the particular section, or category, of news I'm looking for. It's almost like a filter for the news if there were such a thing. The Daily News covers any topic from the most current pandemic, COVID-19, to reading about horoscopes if readers are believe in such a thing.  Number four. Everyone with internet knows about one of the biggest social media platforms online. I'm talking about YouTube. The media platform where you can find just about anything from your favorite song to up to the minute news on COVID-19. Most people who know about this platform for having your voice
